along with many others, i was pretty excited when the sony psp was announced, but at the time of its release i did not purchase it because i didn't have the funds available and wanted to see what this baby could really do besides games. after obtaining some mobile device funding and reading that psp owners were able to run emulators from various consoles and handhelds, surf the internet via wipeout pure, and watch movies off the memory stick, i went to craigslist.org and picked one up from a local seller at a good price. one specific detail that i had the seller check first was the firmware version on the device. he confirmed it was 1.5, meaning that it was a u.s. model that had not been upgraded since it was purchased.this was important because hackers figured out how to get homebrew applications (emulators, games, etc.) running on devices with firmware 1.5. sony then released update 1.5.1 for u.s. psps, and this took away the ability to run the homebrew stuff as sony worked quickly to patch holes that were cracked.
since there were never any new features or real reason to perform this update i skipped it and kept my device at 1.5. i loved playing donkey kong country on my snes console and enjoy playing it, along with many other snes and game boy games, on my psp.

i then read that hackers finally cracked the umd format and were able to extract the iso files from the umd. and fairly recently some people figured out how to run full games off of the memory stick without a umd even loaded in the psp.
i got the wipeout pure iso via a bittorrent download to test this method out, and found it actually runs faster off the memory stick and requires less power. also, the web browsing feature worked with wipeout pure on the memory stick. the web browsing in this game is a bit tedious, although it was cool to view geek.com on the psp.

the ability to extract the files from your umd and put two or three games on a memory stick to save power and eliminate the need to carry around multiple umds is very cool. i am not sure what the legal issues are with extracting the iso from a umd you own and using it on your own device, but i treat it as i do with dvds that i own and then rip to a portable device format that i play on my memory stick. as long as it isn't shared then it should be fine, but that discussion could go on and on.

ok, so now i have a psp that i use to play snes console games, play full psp games off the memory stick, browse the web, listen to music, watch movies from the umd and memory stick, and view photos transferred to the memory stick. i am very happy with this setup and am loving gameplay on the psp.
sony recently released firmware update 2.0 in japan, and will release it in the u.s. on august 12th. the update brings:

- a web browser that is more functional than the one in wipeout pure
- the ability to create and use your own backgrounds rather than the one that changes each month on the 1.5 psp models
- an avc codec that improves the video experience
- better video player functionality such as skipping forward in certain time increments
- mp4 (aac) and wav audio format support
- the ability to transfer images between psps using infrared (why not via the faster wi-fi connection?)
- support for tiff, png, gif, and bmp formats instead of just jpg
- an improved network utility
- more language support
wow, after reading that list of new features and improvements i imagine the average psp owner will jump at the chance to perform the free update.
if i perform the update, however, i lose the ability to play emulators and full psp games off my memory stick. i have other devices i browse the 'net with so web browsing with an awkward input method isn't a big deal for me. i see that there are new virtual keyboards being released, though, which may make this a bit more compelling of a feature.
there are also other hacks out there for customizing your background already with firmware 1.5, so that's not a problem.
i already watch videos on my memory stick, but would love a better way to navigate in the movie itself.
i primarily listen to mp3 files so the new audio formats don't effect me.
i see no practical use for transferring images via ir myself, but it would be a good way to share pictures with friends who have a psp.
one other major reason that may push me to upgrade is that newer umd games may require the latest firmware to run on your psp.
it looks like the question of whether or not to update to firmware 2.0 comes down to a decision of whether to play emulator games and full games stored on the memory stick and use various hacks to optimize the psp, or go with the update and get all the functionality designed for the psp and lose the ability to play emulated games.
for now, i am sticking with 1.5 until i get tired of donkey kong country. i also just read news that work is under way to get homebrew running on 2.0 psp devices, so upgrading may be an option for me soon.
